Bab El Salam in Portage

Some of the best customer services in the entire state. They give me a free tea each time I place an order, and its always amazing. Their chili lime fries are my kids favorites and you can't find a better gyro in the county because their pita bread is perfect. All other gyro places around here have the worst pita bread (too thick).I'm fortunate that I live so close to a place we enjoy, trust, and visit frequently.SUPPORT LOCAL PLACES OF BUSINESS!

I cannot begin to give this restaurant enough stars. Food was outstanding! Portions perfect. Owner was so attentive to making sure our dining experience was perfect. Should be packed

This is one of my favorite food places in Portage. Service is super friendly and informative. Portions are huge as well. Plus they have specials and so many delicious options.

Wow! They have the best falafel I have had in years and years. The stuffed grape leaves are the best I have ever had (not bitter at all), and you have to get the hummus, too. Everything we tried on the Bab's platter was phenomenal. We absolutely must return!

I recently came to know about this place and decided to pay them a visit. As soon as we walked in, the hostess greated us. Then we ordered some tea which was delicious. Then we went with hummus with lamb platter and grape leaves. Hummus was really fresh and you could taste tge freshness and grape leaves just melts your mouth. One of the best grape leaves I have ever had. For main course we had chicken shawarma with Moroccan soup and rice. Rice and soup was flavorful and delicious. Chicken was a little dry but flavorful. Chicken breasts are usually dry. In the end they offered us complementary baklawa. Let me tell you my mother inlaw makes some serious baklawa. But this was better than that. I would rate this place 5/5 and officially best middle eastern restaurant in kalamazoo. Can't wait to try their other food.

Mothers day dinner was a success and made easy for the seven of us tonight, cant wait to see you all again when we can dine in and get the famous "chocolate milk" the little guys have grown to love watching you make for them. Everything was fresh and delicious as always tonight. See you soon

Great experience. Food has a wonderful profile of flavor! The menu description matches the appearance of the food. Staff is amazing. The attached grocery is full of cultural products at reasonable prices. Atmosphere is relaxed, feels like you are in Iraq.

I have no words to describe this place and it’s owner Amo Mazen! His food is splendid, we went to his place 1 year ago and never stop going back. I love cooking and don’t eat much out, but visiting Bab El Salam is always a treat.Thanks

If there was 6 stars I'd give it a 7. Great/friendly service, delicious food (including the baclava) and the owner appreciates his customers! Check them out then visit their grocery store next door for some unique Mediterranean treats.

YUM. If you've never been here, you should try it. The Ashley salad is ridiculous. I could eat the whole thing by myself, this is a large. Hummus was just as tasty. Nice decor and service was fast and informative. We will be back for sure.

I was lucky to find this gem on Facebook for locally owned restaurants that need support during the Pandemic. It did not disappoint! Staff went above and beyond on my first trip! I am already looking forward to coming back! Tried the Vegetarian Lunch Sampler, my tastebuds overloaded with flavor! Got the amazing Gyros for my friends who loved them and shared Baklava. Not only will I be coming back again and again, I will be sending all my friends!Bonus: Grocery Store on the other side I cannot wait to explore!

This is an absolutely incredible restaurant. The owner is a wonderful man and the staff are always friendly. The food is INCREDIBLE!! I cannot recommend this restaurant enough. It is one of the best local restaurants in town.

Delicious food, friendly and amazing service. We had six of us, including an infant and toddler. The staff quickly got a couple high chairs and put a couple tables together. The servers were very friendly and they just seemed very attentive.We had a couple different shawarma platters, a couple different sandwiches, and the vegan platter. Every came out within a reasonable time and was delicious. I'm an eater and I felt the portions were good for the price.The owner was very personable and made my family feel welcome. We went to the store that is connected and purchased a few things after we ate. It was pretty convenient to just walk next door.The food was great, but the main reason we'll be back were the owner and other staff - the staff and service overall were awesome.

Have been to this establishment a couple times.... love the service the love the food love the price... I always leave stuffed.. One gentle men even remembered who I was weeks apart from visits and where I came from to eat there.. I will frequent here often.

The food here is delicious and the vegetarian options are excellent. I love the falafel sandwich and my wife loves the stuffed grape leaves. The owner Amo is such a wonderful and caring person. If you haven't been here yet and you like Mediterranean food, you owe it to yourself to experience this restaurant. You will be supporting a fantastic locally owned business and an owner and employees who truly care about the food they serve and the community they are in. The halal grocery store next door is also worth visiting. Tons of ingredients and treats you won't find anywhere else in Portage!

Amazing food, hospitality is the best. Love coming in and having the owner make each visit, a personal one. I'd rate this place 10 stars of I could. 2 stars alone for the cardamom spiced Turkish kahve.

The food was delicious. The wait staff was super friendly. The owner took the time to come to our table and talk to us. It was our first experience here, but we will be back for sure. Try the tea, it is delicious!

Me and My family enjoyed our dinner at Bab El Salam. Even we came around 8.10 pm, they welcomed us. We met Amo Mazen in the first time and he is very great man. He talked with us and based on the discussion, we know that he has many years experience to run the restaurant and met people from all around the world. The restaurant is super clean and nice. They served us like family! The food was very delicious. The price is affordable. The service is perfect. They still served us until more than 9 PM. Thank you Amo Mazen for give us the 5 star service.

Very friendly service! More than one person checked that I was being taken care of for my take out order. That's much appreciated. The mixed shwarma lunch combos were delicious!

I did a search for the best gyro in town and Bab El Salam came up as the clear winner. I stopped in today to place an order for carryout and I am so glad I did. The gyro truly is worthy of being named the best!!! Their falafel was amazing as well, especially when dipped in the garlic sauce. While waiting for my order I went into their store next door. Let me just say I walked in a stranger, but left feeling like an old friend. ❤ The owner, Amo Mazen, was so hospitable and so very engaging. In fact, everyone I encountered was so very kind. I had a bit of a drive back home, so Amo generously poured me a glass of hibiscus ice tea to go. I was so touched by his kindness and generosity. Today was the first visit of many I can already tell! 😊😊

Great food, very good and friendly service. We don't get here often enough, but it's always consistently very, very good. Weirdly enough, they have our favorite french fries anywhere!!

First time here last night and blown away. This place is so good. The owner took the time to talk with us, the staff was friendly, the atmosphere was nice and the food was amazing. You could tell there was pride taken with everything. I'm so excited to have found this place and surprised I haven't heard of it before. We will be back and will bring friends.

Love this little place, yummy food every time...and the store next door is a must see. Yummy foreign desserts, spices and foods to take home. Also these two guys are great. They support local business too. Well worth the visit.

The owner, Amo Mazen, and the staff at this restaurant are the friendliest, gracious, most accommodating, and humble people that you will ever meet. The minute you walk in the door, you become part of their family forever. The food is outstanding! We've NEVER had a bad meal in all the times we have been here. We try to visit at least once a week even though we live at least a 45 minute drive away from the restaurant. It is definitely worth the drive no matter how far away you are. We love you all!! 💕
